You Are In Control On Twitter

As most of you know, I have been a twitter addict for some time now, and yes it is an addiction I very much enjoy for a number of reasons. It allows me to connect with people, cultures, events outside my physical world. It also gives me the chance to chat with people about serious and not so serious issues.

It has also given me a voice. A voice that I am now able to share with a large number of audience, which I was not able to do so before.

However, I have also realised the twitter community has its own self of unwritten rules, that dictate good or bad behaviour on the service. But, some people might feel differently about what constitutes good twitter behaviour.

I read a lot of blog posts and articles about how to use twitter and I’m at a point where enough is enough!!!!

I mean, why should I give away my freedom of tweet to those kind of individuals that for some kind of reason have decided to form their own guidelines that to be honest I totally disagree with.

Just remember, how you use twitter is completely up to you. Follow hundreds of people, follow a dozen. Post every hour, post never. You are in control on twitter!

Hello, I’m @MarchiP and I’m in Control!

I’m not saying you should engage in legal pitfalls such as defamation, terrorist threats, pornography, disclosure of private information, or intellectual property infringement.

But, you should feel free to express yourself in a way that is appropriate mostly to you and then to any other twitter citizen… don’t pay attention the “DOs and DONTs” or the “10 Things You Should Never Do” on twitter! Just pay attention on the reason you got on twitter in the first place and be yourself no matter what.

See, not everyone is on twitter for the same reason. Some of us are just to connect with others on a personal level, or some of us are on it for business purposes so how can we create a number of rules to accommodate us ALL.

I say we don’t and let each and every one of us to tweet as we please, and enough with the restrictions (as I refer to the so called twitter rules).

If you want to thank an individual by retweeting their tweets, you do so!

If you want to share your feelings with the rest, you do so!

If you need to pimp your site/blog, you do so!

If you must share a great quote, you do so!

If you want to tweet and drive, you do so!

If you want to tweet 24/7, you do so!

If you want to self promote, you do so!

Well, you get my point. Be tweeting and be well.

“Rules are not necessarily sacred, principles are.” Franklin D. Roosevelt

Practice Safe Social Networking

NONA Belomesoff was offered what she thought was a dream job working with the New South Wales Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service (WIRES). Instead she was allegedly lured to her death by a man she befriended on Facebook, who claimed to work for the animal welfare group. Read full story….

Queensland Police have issued an unprecedented warning to all teenagers to remove photos from the site after  Nona’s  murder.

It is a tragic reminder that people do not always represent themselves truthfully online. No matter what our age or gender we should be careful of the people we meet online.

Our days Social networking is everywhere. It is common to find parents, children, coworkers and even the elderly on the networks across the social media world on sites such as Twitter, MySpace, Facebook etc. With social networks people across the world have access to tools and options that were previously non existent.

However, there are just as many new opportunities to connect as there are to get into potential danger. Social networking has opened up many new doorways for cyber crime.

Participating  in online social networking sites  leaves a trail of personal information.

Should we forego social networking altogether? No,instead each and everyone of us should take responsibility for protecting ourselves and most of all our children.

How can you protect yourself and practice safe social networking?

Do your homework – Be sure to research the website before registering by reading over the website’s privacy policy, paying attention to the privacy settings, and seeing how the community is structured.

Customise your settings – Use the privacy features on the site you use to restrict access to your profile. The default settings for some sites may allow anyone to see your profile, you can customise your settings.

Look out for strangers – The Internet makes it easy for people to misrepresent their identities and motives. If you interact with people you do not know, be cautious about the amount of information you reveal or agreeing to meet them in person.

Use strong passwords – Protect your accounts with passwords that cannot easily be guessed.

Think before you post – Posts are not only shared by your friends but also their friends’ friends and so on.

Social media present powerful opportunities, but they also pose significant dangers. Do your best to keep yourself and your family safe and secure on the wide world web.

Twitter Lists Hiccups....

Let me start by saying, we are humans and naturally we do make mistakes, however, at times we do forget technology itself is made by us!

I recently received several DMs from friends asking me why they were removed from certain of my twitter lists, something I wasn not familiar with. So of course, to my surprise, I had to double check the mentioned lists…. and no, those individuals had not been removed!!!

If you follow @listwatcher they will DM you every time there has been some kind of change, with a list you are a member of or when you have been added to and which list.

For those of you who are following @listwatcher, please do double check the listings mentioned in their DMs, before contacting a fellow twitter citizen. I personally found the @listwatcher quite faulty and at times extremely annoying!

Is it @listwatcher’s unreliable service or just twitter hiccups!? Here is @listwatcher’s respond to several tweets they have received….

“looks like twitter stabilized lists. sorry for dm flood, it’s all twitter. have fun. buy an ice-cream and have fun. smile often”

Or is it just the simplicity of list use; because let me tell you my friend, there is no simplicity when it comes to the lists. Myself, I struggled for some time before I had the listing situation under control. I now have 3 twitter accounts and I make sure each list on each account represents the people that are mentioned.

In my opinion, it’s not just about who you list but also how you list them. See, listing me as “@????/deathdalove” hmmm  means you’ve listed the wrong person and have no idea of who I am! The irony in that! To me, death represents fear, and I don’t address fear with much grace;)

Well, thank you for letting me share this message with you, and once again, please do double check listings before accusing any fellow tweeps.

Not A Commercial Success....

TV commercials are considered the most effective advertising format. However, the only kind of effect the following ads had on my family and I was, “Oh God! That was quite disturbing!” After seeing the following commercials, we all looked at each other with amaze and disgust.

Anyone care to join me for a Cadbury Creme Egg?….

And if you thought that was awful, maybe you rather not see the following ad….

Oh, no my friend, it does not get better….

These sort of ads could be the reason TV networks charge high prices for TV commercials; somehow, they know certain ads will loose them a number of valuable viewers!
