I Owe You Nothing

As most of us know, twitter is not what it used to be….

I remember the good old twitter days were all about introduction, great content, discussions and a lot of fun. We were interested in building communities, we were actually excited to interact with fellow twitter citizen.

We then moved on to bigger and not so better things; such as paying more attention to our followers count and trying to make ourselves seem more important, by the ever increasingly number of our *friends! We were no longer interested in building quality communities, but simply the number of our followers.

However, many decided that to actually seem important on twitter, we need to have a large audience without actually following them back. Come now, we don’t want to come across as ‘too desperate for numbers’ or as the ‘follow for follow’ kind; we want to let the online world know, or rather twitter, that we are important, we are the leaders….. just look at our following/followers count and let the numbers speak for themselves. Which meant, unfollowing most of our followers, we once referred to as our friends!!!

But as we all know, times change, trends change, minds change and now more than ever, we, the twitter citizens are actually also paying attention to behaviour. We no longer see twitter as one way street; we now interact and grow with tweeps that not only matter to us but we also matter to them.

Speaking for myself, am no longer interested in those who are not interested in me, or my opinion for that matter. Am actually quite tired of ‘THOSE’ who for some reason think (and to my amaze, some also believe) having a list of social media “DOs & DONTs that only apply to the rest of us, will gain our support and respect. As I’ve said many times before, your rules you obey them, but most of all have some class.

Now, some will state that unfollowing everyone or most of their followers, is because they were unable to keep up with their stream or to avoid unwanted DMs and spam, but twitter citizens do know better….

No need to reach 100k, to realise how chaotic twitter, in general, can be; also, there are several tools and applications to manipulate twitter content, to your likings. If not, delete current account and create a new one…. which to my knowledge, only one well known twitter citizen has done so, and of course has gained the respect of many, including myself.

What prompt me to discuss this matter? Personal attack!!

In my opinion, how you handle twitter, is upto you as an individual. If you want to follow or unfollow everyone and anyone, it is your business and no one should say otherwise. Myself, I don’t take unfollows on a personal level and I don’t think many fellow onliners do, for the obvious reasons. However, if I decide to unfollow you as well, do not attack me and keep your ignorant comments to yourself. Don’t you dare use my blog to express your anger towards me, don’t even bother me with small details and idiotic threats; I owe you nothing and your online identity is not a threat to me.

I’ll finish by saying, I think it’s about time I came out of my shell!!!….
