Auto DMs & How To Opt Out….

AutoDMs1

Thanks to twitter, I have come across some of the finest people life has to offer, however, I find it extremely difficult to befriend with certain twitter users;  reason being  ”Auto DMs”.  If you want to actually connect with me, do so.

“Auto DMs” (direct messages) are automatically sent by a user of an account that you follow.

I do understand for some users it’s an appropriate option to use “Auto DMs”, as many of us don’t have the time to respond to everyone personally.  Myself,  I do ppreciate the acknowledgement of my follow, even though they are incredibly impersonal!

Now, what about the ones that have taken it one step further.  It’s one thing  to use “Auto DM” to greet new  followers, but to use them to promote services or products… makes DMs the closest thing twitter has to spam.

Do “DMs” annoy me?  No, however, I do prefer my time spent on twitter, with people that actually acknowledge me for ME and who I am, rather for my “follow”.

If you’re a twitter user, you either love or hate “Auto DMs” and for those of you who are no longer willing to put up with such a ”Promotional Tool” (as some have referred to) you can Opt Out by taking the following steps…

- Visit www.socialoomph.com(You don’t need a Social Oomph account to opt out of “Auto DMs”).

- See menu on the left hand side and click on “DM Opt- Out”.

- Log into your twitter account.

- Follow @OptMeOut.

- Wait for @OptMeOut to follow you back.  They’ll send you a DM telling you they have.

- Next, send a DM to @OptMeOut.

- After sending the DM, unfollow @OptMeOut – this way your opting out remains private, @OptMeOut will unfollow you as well.

But, do keep in mind, the Auto DMs may connect you with some incredible people.  There’s always the choice of deleting such messages, however, I do think unfollowing an individual because of a DM, is somehow extreme.
