The Red Faces skit featured men in blackface pretending to be the Jackson 5. The ‘Jackson Jive’ group performed the same act on the variety show 20 years ago.
I, as an individual, think that racism does no longer exist and yet is EVERYWHERE!!!!…. It’s amazing what us humans, sometimes, will say and do to hurt another!
However in this situation.. I don’t see it. I’m sure the performers did not intend to insult ANYONE… stupid, inconsiderate of them, YES…. RACIST ~ Heck NO, but…

Marchi, I feel you my brother. I think Harry Connick, Jr was speaking from his cultural perspective; not that Harry is a cultural racist. But he grew up in the southern United States of America where such depictions of black people by whites were very hurtful. In the early 1920s, for a white person to perform in blackface was the ultimate insult for blacks, because it denied black artists from performing their own work. The jazz musician Harry Connick, Sr. raised his son not to be racist, thus for Harry,Jr., to see that skit brought back the worst of American culture and he did not want to participate with promulgating such depictions on an international level. Image as they say is everything. Especially to African Americans who have lived a life of denigration. You can still see this denigration in the way white Americans denigrate the current American President as a result of being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Firstly I take offense to HCJ assumption that we are all versed in Americas history and that we ‘should know better’ attitude…theres many countries in this world with varied histories, are we to know them all?
HCJ probaly realised that this could be professional suicide in America and quickly distanced himself from the skit though I do believe there were some honourable intentions.
The way I see it…as an Australian…it was nothing more than a innocent yet naive joke…an aussie joke..it had nothing to do with racism, it was in the likes of such acts as Con the Fruiterer.
We are starting to live in a world were we are going to have to apologise after every thought or opinion just in case we offend somebody somewhere.
Now Harold its quite a whopping statement that white americans are denigrating the US President for his Nobel Peace Price.
GIVE ME A FREAKIN BREAK. Racism is alive because people wont let it go.Have you ever heard the saying ” If you stir crap it keeps smelling”. Well keep bringing up racism and it will still exist. African-Americans no longer “Have it bad”. Keep living in the past and you will stay in the past. As far as the Nobel Peace Prize,He hasn’t done shit,every president has talked to other countries,yet none of them have won it recently. Hell Bill Clinton went and rescued two Asian women over in China.I am tired of hearing about racism,If racism was still alive there wouldn’t be a African-American in office.
